Some ask if coaching is like therapy or counseling. The answer is "no" it is not counseling or therapy. The biggest difference is that I do not "tell" a client what they must, should, could do - they figure that out with my guidance along the path we travel. My coaching is co-active meaning my client and I collaborate, we are equally aligned to meet their needs or desired change. We are not "fixing" anything "broken." Therapy and coaching may approach a situation similarly or ask some of the same questions. My clients might express anger, shed tears, or come to coaching without direction in their lives. In any case, I am obligated to see the big picture and to discuss with my clients the appropriateness of therapy over coaching and make recommendations accordingly.
Coaching is about listening, deep listening, and about curiosity, intuition, generating learning by the client, holding the client accountable for the things they say they want. I do not have to be in a face-to-face meeting to make that happen or use those skills. I coach clients all over the country and do so by phone. Some clients have never met me. When clients are local, they do have a choice of meeting in person or coaching via phone and most do both, whichever best meets their schedule.
Though no licensing is required, training and certification is a must for a coach. I am certified, for instance, through the International Coach Federation and abide by the guidelines of that organization. I honor the coaching relationship and fully inform my clients of my qualifications, limitations, boundaries and services offered. I maintain the highest level of integrity and confidentiality of my clients.
This is determined in the initial meeting between coach and client. The norm is to meet once a week for 30-50 minutes but again, this is co-actively decided between coach and client.
Fees vary depending on the services or program desired by a client. This would also be discussed in the initial meeting. There's really no "rule of thumb" other than fees are generally paid at the beginning of each coaching month.
